The ADI Part 1 is the first of three qualifying tests you must pass to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). It's a computer-based theory examination consisting of two parts: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception clips.
Test Structure
- 100 multiple-choice questions - You need to score at least 85/100 to pass
- 14 hazard perception clips - You need to score at least 57/75 to pass
- Total test time: Approximately 2 hours including breaks
How to Prepare Effectively
1. Study the Official Materials
The DVSA recommends studying the Highway Code, The Official DVSA Guide to Driving, and The Official DVSA Guide to Learning to Drive. These books contain all the information you'll be tested on.
2. Use Online Practice Tests
Practice makes perfect. Use official DVSA practice materials and third-party apps to test yourself regularly. Aim to consistently score above 90% before booking your test.
3. Master Hazard Perception
The hazard perception test catches many candidates off guard. Practice identifying developing hazards early, but avoid clicking too frequently as this can result in a zero score for that clip.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Rushing your preparation - Allow at least 4-6 weeks of focused study
- ❌ Only memorizing questions - Understand the concepts, don't just learn answers
- ❌ Neglecting hazard perception - It requires different skills than the theory test
- ❌ Booking too early - Only book when you're consistently scoring 90%+

What Happens Next?
