Mastering the ADI Part 2 Driving Test: Expert Guide
The ADI Part 2 is widely considered the most challenging of the three qualifying exams. It's not just a driving test—it's an advanced assessment of your driving ability at an exceptionally high standard. With only 31 driving faults allowed and absolutely no serious or dangerous faults permitted, you need to be operating at near-perfection.

Commentary Driving Explained
Commentary driving is where many candidates struggle initially. You need to verbalize your thought process and observations constantly. For example: "Checking mirrors... signalling left... slowing to 20mph as I approach this school zone... noting the parked cars on the left which may obscure children..." This demonstrates your awareness and decision-making process to the examiner.
Common Part 2 Failure Points
- Insufficient observations: Missing a mirror check or blind spot observation can result in a serious fault.
- Poor junction approach: Speed, positioning, and observations must all be perfect at junctions.
- Weak commentary: Not providing enough detail or going silent during critical moments.
- Overly cautious driving: Being too hesitant can fail you just as easily as being too aggressive.
- Accumulating minor faults: Even without any serious faults, 32+ driving faults means failure.
How Long Does Part 2 Training Take?
This varies depending on your current driving standard. An average driver might need 20-30 hours of specialized training to reach Part 2 test standard. However, if you already drive regularly and have good habits, you might need less. Conversely, if you've picked up bad habits over years of driving, you may need more intensive retraining. An experienced trainer can assess your starting point and create a personalized training plan.
